The International Cooperation for the Integration of the Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress (CIP4) organization announced at IGAS 2007 the second place winners in all three categories for the annual The Jürgen Schönhut Memorial CIP4 International Print Production Innovation (CIPPI) Awards.
Second place in the ¡ÈMost innovative use of process automation category¡É went to Daimu Co., a
Japanese print shop with a staff of 35 employees. Daimu¡Çs objective was to completely digitize its workflow.
This company built their automation project around Olive¡Çs PrintSapiens MIS system and integrated it in stages with Trueflow from Screen and K-Station from Komori, allowing Daimu to automate job planning, prepress and printing. In the process, Daimu integrated two facilities, eliminating waste in production operations and communication and creating a new proof workflow, dramatically reducing manual mistakes, and allowing employees to focus more on intellectual work, as opposed to repetitive and routine work.

Dresden is the capital city of the German Federal Free State of Saxony. It is situated in a valley on the River Elbe. The city's population is 500,000 (2006) and just 150 km to Prague in Czech Republic.
Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with extraordinary cultural and artistic splendor. The controversial bombing of Dresden in World War II and 40 years within the Soviet bloc state of East Germany changed the face of the city dramatically.
Since German re-unification, Dresden has emerged as a cultural, political, and economic centre in the eastern part of the Federal Republic of Germany.

Very nice view of the river and cultural buildings are available through the big windows of the Congress Center. Very good environment for the event.

64 people from 36 International companies attended to this event. 6 Japanese venders and over 10 Japanese people joined to this event. Some new faces were there. In 2007, it was held from February 19 through 25 and attracted over 55,000 visitors from Spain, Portugal and overseas. Almost 2,000 companies were represented on 480 stands showing a broad range of prepress, digital, screen and offset printing, materials, finishing and related services.

Some 12,275 companies operate in the Iberian graphic arts and converting industry employing almost 135,000 people (ref: FIEGRAF). The increase in domestic demand has led to a 5% upturn in production growth over the last 2 years, equating to Euros 11,245 million, and this in turn has led to investment in new technologies in the region.
OMC, Komori dealer in Spain, made a major investment in the show with a 1,000 sq m booth hosting 3 Komori presses providing over 10 live demos every day of the show: a Lithrone S840P: showing 2 jobs undergoing smooth and rapid changeover; a Lithrone S529 processing 3 jobs in sequence in under 14 minutes to extremely impressed audiences; and a Spica.

¡ÈThe Lithrone S29 is by far the star attraction of the show,¡É explained Enrique Rodriguez Garcia, commercial director of OMC. ¡ÈIt is impressive to see it handle 3 jobs with such automation and efficiency. The level of interest in all the presses on display was exceptional¡É.

OMC has reputation for strong products, service and support and it is this that has led the company to be the leading supplier of 40-inch presses in Spain today, with a high percentage in packaging specialists. ¡ÈThe trend is towards added value finishes and today we have 50 presses with coating units and about 20 of these are UV,¡É explains Enrique.

About the 2007 Komori calendar
The Komori calendar series based on the concept ¡ÈA collaboration of creativity and printing technology¡É started in 2005, and the 2007 edition marks our third year.
In the past, graphic design and printing technology have had a mutual history of influencing each other, and this relationship has not changed. But now this type of work has gone beyond the realm of simple commercial design, establishing its cultural position as a new art and entering the collections of domestic and foreign art museums.
For this edition of the calendar, printing technology plays a part in supporting Mr. Katsui¡Çs art, and high quality is always a necessity. The capacity to emphasize the depth and vividness of color, to draw the lines finely and sharply, to express the artist¡Çs concept dynamically and harmoniously—this is the required printing technology. And to realize them, a high-performance printing press is indispensable.
The 2007 edition of the Komori calendar embodies the challenge of expressing the new designs of this creator, representative of Japan and active worldwide, and Komori¡Çs cutting-edge presses and printing technology.

CIP4 is the international cooperation for the integration of processes in prepress, press and postpress organization. CIP4 brings together vendors, consultants and end-users in the print communications, Graphic Arts industry and associated sectors, covering a variety of equipment, software, peripherals, and processes. Members participate in focused working groups to define future versions of JDF, to study user requirements, and to design a JDF Software Development Kit.
CIP4 currently consists of 303 members:
14 Partner Members
136 Full Members
146 Associate Members
7 Appointed Members
Komori started as the member of CIP3 organization founded in 1995, and we are working continuously even after the change of organization CIP3 to CIP4 in 2000.We have continued and participated also in the 11th Interop event from the 3rd time, and the performance of our system is a top level about compatibility with the system of the other company.
Komori already provided JDF communication between Komori K-Station and MIS at around 20 sites all over the world. K-Station has been installed at a customer who has Komori¡Çs competitor¡Çs press to try to establish Industrial Standard JDF communication with competitor¡Çs system. Komori is pushing ahead CIP4 policy in the industry.

The 11th CIP4/JDF Interoperability Test Event in beautiful and historic Quebec City, Canada was held at Manoir Victoria Hotel hosted by Dynagram in 6-10 Nobember, 2006.

Around 70 people from over 30 International companies attended to this event. Some new faces were there. Almost of systems were based on JDF V.1.2. Very few tests based on JDF V.1.3 were made.

Komori sent three software engineers and one marketing people for Interop Test Event and Technical Meetings from November 6th through 10th. Registered product is K-Station Ver. 2.12 beta7 at this time.
Komori tested with 8 MIS companies/9 systems, 1 Prepress company/system and another POD company/system during 3 days.
With 10 companies/11 systems, Komori K-Station worked without any major problem on tests. Still some systems of other companies are in early stage of development. Komori has almost completed JDF 1.3 compatibility on K-Station and it has higher performance we believe.

From November 8th through 10th, many Working Group meetings were held in separate rooms. On 10th, plenary session was held and leader of each WG reported about their meeting result. They mainly talked about new modifications of JDF, and then explained about progress of specifications of ICS(Interoperability Conformance Specifications)1.2, ICS1.3, JDF1.3 and JDF1.4. CIP4 organization will join to IGAS2007 and organize CIP4 Pavilion, press conference, general meeting and so forth.
Next Interop Event will be held at Dresden, Germany between March 12 through 16, 2007.

Hailed by exhibitors as "spectacular, absolutely incredible," "phenomenal," and "the best show I can really remember," the four-day GRAPH EXPO® and CONVERTING EXPO® held at McCormick Place in Chicago in mid-October, was an unprecedented success.
With more than 630 exhibitors filling over 440,000 square feet of booth space, this was the largest U.S. national graphic communications and converting trade show since 2000. Its education program of nearly 70 sessions drew a record number of ticket sales, notably the largest registration since 1995, with participants choosing to attend more sessions than in the past, including six sold out sessions.
Some comments from exhibitors are asa follows,
"This Show is Smokin'!"
"We were optimistic; but this is beyond anything that I expected."
"Standard Finishing Systems had another record show this year. We did more business at this year's GRAPH EXPO than we did at PRINT® 05 last year, and last year's PRINT was a record for us!"
"We've been to other trade shows, but this is probably the best show I can really remember. The numbers are dramatic and people are in a buying mood."
"It's a great way to generate new business."
"Traffic has been great; it's the decision-makers who are coming to this show."
Komori America met at GRAPH EXPO and CONVERTING EXPO with "customers who weren't on our radar screen and whom we probably would not have had an opportunity to talk with had we not been here," according to Susan Baines, marketing communications manager. "We have been extremely busy here. In the first day of the show we signed 16 contracts. The response has been phenomenal."
Next year, GRAPH EXPO will be held on September 9-12 at McCormick Place in tandem with the first edition of PackPrintSM, a new exhibition launched by the Graphic Arts Show Company with the support of the Flexographic Technical

KOMORI CLEANS UP AT GRAPH EXPO 06 WITH $74 MILLION IN SALES
(From Komori America Corporation¡Çs press release)

(Rolling Meadows, IL October 30, 2006) Graph Expo 06 proved to be the most successful Graph Expo for Komori America in the new millennium, with 46 orders totaling in excess of $74 million in sales. Press orders ran the gamut from the full size System 38S web press to the small format Spica 429P. Standing room only crowds filled the booth for the multiple daily demonstrations on the award-winning LS640, the new LS629 and the Spica 429P. ¡ÈWe are overwhelmed at our success at Graph Expo. Attendees were in the buying mood, and the Komori press technology on display in our stand piqued their interest. Printers who have waited to purchase new press technology, now know that to stay competitive they need state of the art technology. We were able to show a wide range of equipment as well as some unique applications that drove that message home,¡É says Stephan Carter, President and COO, Komori America.

Komori accomplished a feat never before accomplished on a tradeshow floor; the completion of 17 jobs in less than 90 minutes on the new LS29. ¡ÈThe tradeshow floor is a unique printing environment,¡É says Don Newberry, Manager of Komori¡Çs GraphiCenter. ¡ÈYou tend to print conservatively, but the makeready speed of the LS29 and its advanced technology allowed us to demonstrate to show-goers what the LS29 is truly capable of achieving in a real production environment.¡É

Komori also demonstrated value-added printing techniques by running both jobs on the LS640 using MetalFx technology, that provides a full range of metallic colors using only one base metallic ink. The Spica 429 was demonstrated running Toyo¡Çs new Kaleido ink, that expands the color gamut of four color process to that of six colors.
¡ÈOur stand design, our demonstration format and having our award winning equipment on display really paid off for us,¡É says Carter. ¡ÈThe momentum we built at Graph Expo has put us well ahead of our sales goals for this year.¡É
Good evening and welcome to our Graph Expo Press Conference.
I am very happy to be here in Chicago and I am looking forward to a very successful Graph Expo.
You have heard the word Kando mentioned this evening, and now I would like to tell you why Kando has become our corporate management philosophy.
Kando means creating satisfaction beyond expectations. Since our beginning, Komori has put the needs of our customers first, so it is logical to embrace the Kando message throughout our organization. For Komori, Kando means designing products and services that exceed customer expectations; creating products and an operating environment that are environmentally friendly and providing our employees a work experience allows them to grow and expand their abilities. Our belief is that when these three elements work in harmony, we can achieve our ultimate goal of customer Kando.
Our new Tsukuba plant is an example of Komori Kando.
As you saw in the video, we are operating in a ¡Ègreen¡É environment, and focusing our manufacturing and design teams on creating products that exceed our customers¡Ç needs in an industry that is constantly changing. Listening to our customers and designing equipment that helps them achieve success is our ultimate success. This evening you will hear from two of our customers who are currently installing unique press configurations. I like to think this is Kando in action. I personally want to thank them for their business and for being here tonight to share their experience with Komori.
As Mr. Carter stated, Komori Corporation has experienced much success in the past year. We are growing our market share around the world and we believe it is due to the strength of our products and our people. As we go forward, we will continue to bring new innovations to the marketplace, keeping our eyes focused on the changing print marketplace and our ears open to our customers, with our final goal of delighting our customers with Komori Kando.
Thank you for your kind attention.

Yoshiharu Komori

(Abstract from CIP4 Press Release dated on September 8, 2006)
The International Cooperation for the Integration of the Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress (CIP4) organization announced the first and second place winners in all three categories for the annual The Jürgen Schönhut Memorial CIP4 International Print Production Innovation (CIPPI) Awards.
The CIPPI awards are given annual to the applicant with the most compelling case study in one of three categories, which are:
¡ûMost innovative use of process automation technology in an implementation,
¡ûBest cost/benefit realization as a result of process automation implementation, and
¡ûBiggest improvement in efficiency and customer responsiveness as a result of process automation.

In the category of ¡Èbest cost/benefit realization¡É, second place went to Tanghe Printing N.V. ( Komori customer) of Komen, Belgium.
¡ÈThis year¡Çs winning case studies marked some important changes in the industry compared to last year¡Çs applications,¡É said James Harvey, CIP4¡Çs Executive Director. ¡ÈLast year we saw case studies that focused on the interoperability between two or three systems. This year¡Çs applications showed more comprehensive implementations and the all important extension to the customer¡Çs operations. These winning case studies are not from printers just trying out JDF, but printers that are really putting it to work as a part of the backbone of their operations. And I find it interesting that, once again, the winners are medium and even small printers; examples that most printers can take to heart, not just the industry¡Çs giants.¡É
For more details, please seehttp://www.cip4.org/cippi/index.html¡ÈBooklet with Case-Studies of the Winning Applications in 2006¡É can be downloaded at above site as a big PDF file. The case of Tanghe Printing is included in the booklet.
(Abstract from Booklet with Case-Studies of the Winning Applications in 2006)
Company profile
Tanghe Printing was established in 1974. Now it is a modern sheet-fed offset operation with a workforce of around 35 people. The range of services—alongside offset printing activities (business reports, magazines, books, promos and calendars)—includes prepress.
We do a lot of small production runs which requires a lot of job changes. Our market comprises Belgium (40%), France (45%), Netherlands (10%) and Switzerland (5%).
Systems for JDF workflow are as follows,

¡ûMIS
Hiflex MIS
¡ûPrepress
Agfa¡Çs PDF workflow :Apogee Series 3
CTP : Galileo CtP system
¡ûPrinting press
Komori K-Station for JDF interface
Komori Lithrone 40 (4 color B1 41½¡É)
Komori Lithrone S40S (5 color with coater B1 41½¡É)
¡ûArchive management
NSS Production

Testimonial of Mr. Patrick Tanghe.
¡ÈNetworked production means having a consistent platform on which everybody involved into order management or production processes has access to all important information at any time - whether he works in the office or in the field. He must be able to profit from maximum transparency so that he can optimally handle his job and at the same time to creatively work on the future and the progress of the company. In short – real networked production is of benefit for the whole business process. ¡É
Steps to implement JDF workflow
1982-1998
Belgian software and stand alone solution: DOS application with simple estimate and historic costing application as well as a small statistics generator. The individual modules were not interconnected, and the system only had limited output capabilities. It could not be adapted to the needs of our expanding company.
1999-2003
New software implemented.
Improvements: Windows environment, networking of administration with production.
Problems: Product not extensive enough. No JDF-compatibility
2003-2006
We opted for Hiflex MIS because we found that this system was the only really comprehensive, single vendor, software package, supported the languages we needed (to serve our international market) and had already been networked with production using JDF/JMF.
For the integration of prepress into a JDF networked production environment we updated to :ApogeeX v2.5 and at the beginning of 2006 to v.3.0.
In order to network our Komori presses with JDF, K-Station software was purchased.

Result after the implementation
Production meetings were reduced by 45 minutes per day.
The Return Of Investment (ROI) of the JDF implementation was 822.8 % within five years (which means that the investment is paid back 9.22 times). The Net Present Value (NPV) is EUR 886,570,-- or US$ 1,132,678,-- which equals an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 435%.
Increase of sold productivity on the presses: 15% (Lithrone 440) and 13% (Lithrone S 540)
Savings add up to EUR 114,400,-- per year: (1 person x 8 hours x 220 days x EUR 50,--) + (0.5 person x 8 hours x 220 days x EUR 30,--). This includes all direct and indirect costs.

CIPPI Award in ¡ÈSupport of the winning application of Tanghe Printing N.V.¡É was given to Komori International (Europe) B.V. and partners. Dr. Harry Adams and Komori¡Çs Japanese engineers worked with Tanghe Printing and finally got this prize.

17th July, 2006: RG Printing bought the newly launched Komori Lithrone S 529 after seeing it at Ipex, the first B2 press for the B3 print house. The South Wales based commercial printer prides itself on its quality and service, with a mission statement ¡ÈSmall enough to care, large enough to cope¡É. The in-house design and production capabilities are utilised by its 300 strong Welsh customer base. One of its B3 presses needed replacing twelve months ahead of schedule and following much research RG Printing chose the Komori Lithrone S 529 to provide a quantum leap in quality and turnaround time, attributes which will take the company forward. The purchase, supported by HSBC bank, is a huge expansion for R G who see the investment as a springboard into new markets. The company is in the enviable position of having B2 work readily lined up from its customers, which include government, universities and housing associations, but also hopes the press will open doors into new sectors.

Customers are just beside of Mr. Y. Komori at IPEX. Mr. Andy Lewis, General Manager; Mr. Andrew Studley, Chairman; Mr. Komori; Carol Studley, CEO; Jarrod Windsor, Production Manager and Komori UK representatives.

Andrew Studley, Chairman says: ¡ÈWe conducted a lot of research into this press before taking the plunge into B2 as we have ambitious plans for R G Printing over the next six to twelve months. We have significant growth planned and aim to take on larger contracts in new sectors with bigger organisations. The press will speed up turnaround and allow us to guarantee response times. As a young forward thinking company we need to operate presses that run alongside our plans for expansion. By the end of next year we hope to have doubled turnover, and if that happens we will need another press to go in the unit we have recently purchased behind our factory.¡É R G has also purchased a new CTP system.
